Future of Libraries,

Can technology change the way we interact with books in libraries?

There has been a significant decrease in the use of libraries and in general the use of physical books with an introduction to ebooks and PDFs. Tangible computing could help in adding a technological element to the libraries eventually to the interaction with the books without losing the touch of the actual physical book. As the world progresses towards an invisible user interface, the future of conventional libraries can take an interesting turn. As machine learning and Artificial Intelligence grow in popularity, it opens up various areas for innovation in the field of Tangible Computing.

Key observations at the Library:

People usually come to the library in search of a book with a particular title, author, or topic. Students are very rare, the ones present are just browsing through books.

Key points from the Interview with the librarian:

Initially when people used to come for a book, the librarian would go pick it out for them, which reduced the scope of the reader. Now the librarian just points to the shelf, this in turn helps students find other books they might be interested in. 

Inspiration and Concept Development:

Sorting hat used in the infamous Harry Potter.

The hat takes into consideration all aspects of one's personality while making the decision, the device will help you in deciding which book to choose. 

Books will be compared based on the reviews, relevance, and contents of the book. The device will display all the necessary points in turn help you with making a decision. The device can also display suggestions on better books for the given content.

Using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, we can imagine a future where a bot will make our decisions simpler and faster.

The table is the classic example used in most Augmented Reality devices that use our everyday objects as a part of the device. The books will interact with the device through the sensor attached to it and give you the experience of the library without taking away the essence of it.

The proposed prototype was a narrowed down interaction on the product where we planned to code for two major interactions - the tap interaction and the transfer of files from the book to the nib of the stylus. The idea was to have two potentiometers connected to the same Pi that would compute the voltage flowing through one variable potentiometer and match that voltage with a constant potentiometer to check whether the book belonged to the category or not.  Further transfer of files would be depicted by the traffic light mechanism where the response would be to signify that the file transfer is complete.
